About Loggerhead Turtles:

Loggerhead Sea Turtles are one of the largest hard-shelled turtles in the world, with adults weighing 200-350 pounds and measuring 3 feet long! They're named for their large heads, which house powerful jaws capable of crushing hard-shelled prey like conchs, clams, and crabs. Loggerheads have reddish-brown, heart-shaped shells (carapaces) and can live 50-70 years or more. These ancient mariners have been swimming Earth's oceans for over 100 million years—they shared the seas with dinosaurs! Loggerhead turtles are incredible navigators, using Earth's magnetic field to find their way across thousands of miles of ocean. Female loggerheads return to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs—an amazing feat of navigation! They dig nests in the sand and lay about 100 eggs, then return to the sea. Baby loggerheads hatch at night and instinctively crawl toward the ocean, guided by moonlight. Sadly, loggerhead turtles are endangered due to fishing nets, pollution, and beach development. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these ancient ocean wanderers!
